The Operational Challenge

Late-life offshore assets require operators to balance production availability, asset integrity, regulatory requirements and operating cost. As equipment ages, maintaining reliability without increasing maintenance effort or OPEX becomes increasingly challenging.

VROC was engaged by a North Sea operator to improve visibility into the health and performance of critical offshore assets and support earlier identification of developing reliability issues.

During the project, restrictions on offshore personnel also meant that reliability engineers and other support teams were required to work remotely, reducing their normal direct visibility of asset performance. The operator needed a way to maintain continuous asset oversight while ensuring that offshore personnel and maintenance activity were focused where they were most needed.

How VROC was Applied

Within three weeks, VROC connected to the operator's historian, ingested historical operational data and began receiving live data through a secure connection.

Following initial training and support from VROC's data science and engineering team, the operator's asset performance and reliability engineers deployed AI models across critical equipment including compressors, generators and water injection pumps.

The models continuously monitored equipment health and performance, identifying significant deviations from expected operation and allowing engineers to investigate contributing factors and potential root causes remotely.

This gave reliability teams greater visibility into developing asset problems and supported earlier, more focused intervention.

What Changed Across Operations

Over the nine-month project, the operator began using AI-derived asset health insights as part of ongoing reliability and maintenance activity.

Remote reliability visibility improved.
Engineers working away from the offshore facilities could continuously monitor asset health and identify developing conditions requiring attention.

Maintenance became more targeted.
Greater visibility into predicted equipment behavior helped reduce reactive “firefighting” and supported a more risk-based approach to maintenance and shutdown planning.

Operational teams could focus on optimization.
With improved understanding of equipment condition and performance, the operator was able to move beyond monitoring individual assets and investigate opportunities to optimize wider processes.

Resources could be deployed more effectively. Better remote visibility helped the operator focus offshore personnel, maintenance activity and specialist support on the issues requiring intervention.

Business Impact

Plant 1
USD $1.8M reduction in production loss
Improved reliability visibility and earlier intervention contributed to a significant reduction in production-related losses.

USD $1.4M reduced downtime
Reduced equipment downtime delivered additional operational value.

83% reduction in production loss
The facility recorded a substantial reduction in production loss during the project period. VROC

Plant 2
USD $431K reduction in production loss
The second facility also recorded measurable improvement during the deployment.

80% reduction in production loss
Production losses were substantially reduced over the project period.

Across the operation
The results demonstrate how continuous AI monitoring can create value beyond individual failure predictions. By improving asset visibility, enabling earlier intervention and supporting more targeted maintenance, VROC helped the operator reduce production loss, downtime and operational pressure across multiple late-life facilities.
