Pumping of various liquids and slurries is an essential requirement for mining operations and processing. Due to the often coarse nature of the material being pumped, pumps and associated equipment experience significant wear and are prone to unexpected failures. Failure of this equipment results in downtime and loss of production.
The client's engineering team is able to use VROCs AI Predictive Maintenance platform to generate models that will identify degradation in the performance of their pumps. The team clicks utilises the no-code AI model wizard to produce a model to identify when the pump is degrading or not operating correctly.
Once the team completes the model wizard, the VROC AI platform automatically uses data from the pump and associated equipment to build numerous models of how the pump performs under all operating conditions.
Within an hour the model is running in production providing real-time insights of the health of the pump to the engineering team.
The VROC platform first identified a gradual deviation of the suction flowrate of the pump. After that, the non-driven end (NDE) bearing temperature was identified as gradually increasing above the expected value for the current operating conditions. The combination of the two identified degradations indicated a high likelihood of pump failure due to the deteriorating NDE bearing. The bearing degradation changed the pump curve causing the flowrate deviation as well as an increase of friction and possible shaft contact with both DE and NDE bearing housing which consequently caused an increase of temperature on NDE bearing.
The team were able to identify the root cause of the upcoming failure, plan an appropriate maintenance activity, and perform the repairs as a planned activity at a time convenient to operations and maintenance personnel.
